What are the daily, weekly and annual checks for steam sterilisers? Bowie-Dick, biological indicators and IQ/OQ/PQ validation.
Sterilisation is a cornerstone of infection control, and whether an autoclave works correctly cannot be known from a green light on the screen alone. A device's effectiveness is demonstrated by regular testing, maintenance and documentation.
Daily checks
- Visual inspection of the chamber and gasket, and removal of residue
- Checking water quality (conductivity) and water level
- A Bowie-Dick test or equivalent air removal test for vacuum devices
- Chemical indicators in every load and signing the cycle record
Weekly and monthly checks
A weekly test with a biological indicator (Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores) is recommended; for loads containing implants, a biological indicator must be used in every load. Monthly, a vacuum leak test and safety valve and filter checks are carried out.
Annual validation (IQ/OQ/PQ)
Installation qualification (IQ), operational qualification (OQ) and performance qualification (PQ) include temperature distribution mapping by load configuration, pressure and time verification, and heat penetration tests. Validation must be repeated when the device is moved, after major repairs or when the control system is changed.
Pressure vessel inspection
Because autoclaves are pressure vessels, they must be inspected by authorised inspection bodies at the intervals set by regulation, and safety valves must be checked.
Records and traceability
Date, time, programme, temperature, pressure, duration and operator must be recorded for each cycle. Bioclara ST series devices installed by Hemera Medikal provide this data through the built-in printer and USB drive, and it can be transferred to the HIS through software.
For customers with maintenance contracts, the autoclave maintenance and validation calendar is prepared automatically; an email reminder is sent as dates approach, so that audits never find missing records.
Common problems
Insufficient sterilisation, wet packs and vacuum faults are the most frequent faults in autoclaves. The main causes of wet packs are wrong loading (packs squeezed on top of each other), insufficient drying time, poor-quality steam or water, and a worn gasket. In that case the load cannot be considered safe for sterility and must be reprocessed.
Preventive maintenance calendar
According to manufacturer recommendations the gasket should be checked yearly, the filters every six months and the safety valve annually. Under a Hemera Medikal maintenance contract we replace these parts, clean the steriliser room and deliver the test results as a written report.
Summary
Effective sterilisation is the combination of daily tests, regular maintenance, annual validation and complete records. When any link in this chain is missing, the risk of post-operative infection and audit findings rises. You can contact our service team to plan your maintenance calendar together.
